Hoof Care Award

Skills: To understand the importance of good hoof care.

  1. To be able to name the main parts of the hoof.
  2. Be able to pick up a hoof safely and clean.  This maybe supported.
  3. Recognise the importance and roles of different equine professionals - Such as the Farrier
  4. Name the main Farrier tools and what they are used for.
  5. Recognise a front and back horseshoe.
  6. Name two conditions/ailments of the hoof and their symptoms.

Horse Emotions Award Badge

Skills: To recognise different emotions and herd behaviours.

  1. Recognise different horse emotions shown through the horses, pony or donkey's ears, tail and other body language signs.
  2. Recognise and name different emotions and behaviours when a horse, pony or donkey is at grass.
  3. How can your behaviour affect a horse, pony or donkey both on the ground and when in the saddle?
  4. Desribe how the presense of horses, ponies or donkeys affects your own emotions.
  5. How many emotions can you name? Make a list.

Equine Cookery Award

Skills: To be able to create tasty treats for your herd.

  1. Recognise what food are not good (poisonous)to horses.
  2. Learn cooking skills, chopping, mashing, grating, stirring.
  3. Reading and following a reciepe.

Five Freedoms Award Badge

Skills: To understand that all animals have the right to the 5 freedoms .

  1. Be able to name the five freedoms and the importance of each one.
  2. Recognise the importance and roles of different equine professionals.
  3. Research and understand the roles of equine charities.

Donkey Knowledge Badge

Skills: To recognise different characterics and traits of a donkey.

  1. A Donkey is a hoofed mammal that are part of the Equidae family. Horses and Zebras are also animals that are part of the Equidae family. 
  2. A boy donkey is called a Jack. A girl donkey is called a Jenny.
  3. Donkeys make a loud braying noise that goes on for several seconds.
  4. Donkey’s coats are not waterproof.
  5. Life span 40-50 years
  6. Herbivore eating only grass, shrubs, straw & grains.
  7. Donkey hooves are more elastic than those of horses, and do not naturally wear down as fast.
  8. Donkeys can be used to guard livestock against predators. They instinctively attack, by biting and kicking.
  9. A donkey’s ears are much longer than a horses. Their ears help keep the donkey cool in warm dry environments.

Equine Safety Award

Skills: To understand how to keep safe whilst working with horses and donkeys.

  1. How to move safely around a horse when grooming, leading, in a stable or field.
  2. Understand the need for Hi Viz and when this is required.
  3. What other protective wear should be worn when handling horses/donkeys and why?
  4. Why is it important to wear gloves when riding or leading a horse?
  5. Be aware that changes in weather or routine can influence ponies’ behaviour in the field.
  6. Understand how feeding ponies in a herd can be dangerous. How would you feed hay or feed to more than one pony/donkey in a paddock safely?
  7. Be aware of the dangers of other ponies when catching a pony from the field.
  8. Be aware of the dangers when turning out a pony.
  9. Health and safety of moving around ponies and donkeys.

 

Stable Management Award

Skills: To understand how to work safely and effectively on a stable yard to meet the needs of the herd.

  1. Explain the difference between mucking out and skipping out. Demonstrate how to muck out.
  2. Prepare a stable adding new bedding, water and hay.
  3. Know how to store feed correctly.
  4. Demonstrate how to tie a hay net safely and the reason for using this type of knot.
  5. Understand the need for weighing and feeding the correct amounts for the different members of the herd. Making and weighing a hay net. Reading scales in KG.
  6. Manual Handling – Demonstrate how to pick up a heavy object correctly and safely.
  7. Understand the need for working safely in a tidy environment.
  8. Pasture Management – Cleaning of droppings.
  9. Know and understand the five freedoms of animals.

Grooming Award L1

Skills: To identify and use items of the Berry Fields AAE grooming kit.

  1. Explain the different reasons for grooming a pony or donkey.
  2. Be able to pick up and pick out a pony’s/donkey’s hoof with support.
  3. Know which brushes can be used on a grass kept pony. Explain why other brushes are not used.
  4. Explain the main differences between a pony and donkey coat.
  5. Show how to use a plastic or rubber curry comb.
  6. Show how to use a dandy brush/stiff brush.
  7. Show how to brush a pony’s or donkeys head safely, and which brush to use
  8. Demonstrate how to brush a donkey’s ears correctly.
  9. Explain why you would not brush a wet muddy pony or donkey.
  10. Match, name and explain the different equipment in our grooming kit at Berry Fields.
